1998 to 2002.

(CAADRIA is an association of those who teach and conduct research in computer-aided architectural design in school of architecture throughout Asia.  It now has around 300 members spread in 18 countries.  The first conference was held in Hong Kong in 1996, and has continued the conference series through Taiwan, Japan, China, Singapore, Australia, and Malaysia.)

Institute of Architects, H.K. Institute of Surveyors & H.K. Institution of Engineers in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center on September 2002.

Prepare and execute the tendering exercise, ¡§Procurement of a Symmetric Multi-Processing (SMP) Server for Building Performance Simulation for the Department of Architecture, CUHK¡¨.  Beside all the technical details and machine performance benchmarking, the tender became one of the significant tender exercises among all the major supercomputer vendors for UGC institutes.  Department is requested to sign an agreement with US government for the export of the supercomputer, July 2002.

(The success of the award of the tender made CUHK enjoy 91% discount of the machine list price.  IBM¡¦s US headquarter Managing Broad and Asia Pacific Managing Director approvals are required.  Only two sets of the similar class machines have been shipped to Hong Kong.  One is installed in the basement of Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank.  The other one is going to be installed in the Department of Architecture, CUHK.)

(CUHK transferred and remote execution the whole buildings performance simulation packages to the Tianjin University for a week.  It involved the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation - Fluent, Daylighting Analysis ¡V Desktop Radiance, and integrated design tool ¡V Eco-Tech.  Client and server model has been setup in order to take advantage of the CUHK¡¦s supercomputer facility for remote job submission.)

Long-term negotiation with the US and Beijing vendors to fight for a special arrangement for CUHK to have 99% academic discount for Fluent, Airpak & Gambit, the core technology for computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation.  CFD is the core component for the building performance simulation and the key technology for the University¡¦s strategic development in the Department of Architecture, March 2002.

(The deal made CUHK becomes the biggest CFD software licenses holder among Hong Kong including all the commercial engineering firms, and any single departmental laboratory in Asia.  The special arrangement is last for five years duration.)

(The success of the proposal made the Department to be able to acquire the highest computing power Symmetric Multi-Processing (SMP) system.  The machine will further maintain the Department in the leading position of CFD research and teaching.)

(Sun shading analysis is employed to study the feasibility on the location of the swimming pool.  The proposed residential development is located in Kam Tsin road Hong Kong.  Based on the recommendation from the ¡§Feng Shui¡¨ study, the designer was asked whether the swimming pool could be located in an area that the apartment will not cast any shadows on its water surface.)
